Music
The use of music in the services and gatherings at Redeemer Hoboken exists to accomplish two primary goals: the praise and exaltation of God and the encouragement and comfort of the members of the congregation. To do this, the music program uses an eclectic mix of music which includes historic hymns, contemporary praise music, classical music, pop, jazz, and various types of folk music. This is not done simply to try to please everyone’s varying tastes by supplying a variety of styles. Rather, musicians, composers, and songwriters have always endeavored to communicate God’s love and majesty through music, but no one style could begin to communicate all of what encompasses God. Redeemer Hoboken attempts to reflect the unity and diversity of God’s attributes and glory while also providing a point of communication for the wide variety of cultures and backgrounds that make up the people of Hoboken.
Redeemer Hoboken is fortunate to have as members or regular attenders a number of talented, well trained, and professionally experienced vocalists and musicians. Their backgrounds range from the Broadway stage to Lincoln Center to the jazz and rock clubs and recording studios of the tri-state metro area. These artist’s desire to be a part of leading the congregation in praise of God through music has greatly enhanced the worship services at Redeemer Hoboken. In addition, a Gospel choir, open to anyone who wants to sing, performs every year at the Christmas Lessons and Carols as well as another 2 or 3 times throughout the year.
The church also presents two Open Forums per year, in the fall and in the winter. This is an opportunity to present a topic of special relevance and illustrate it through the viewpoint of 6 or 7 pieces of music which are then accompanied by short commentaries by pastor Tony Hinchliff. Topics have included “The Problem with the World is….Me”, “What is Love?”, and “Creation, Fall, and Redemption” and the music has included selections from Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, contemporary Christian music artists Fred Hammond and Casting Crowns as well as songs by Bob Dylan, Smashing Pumpkins, Paul McCartney, Janis Ian, and Allison Krause.
