Men's Ministry

Like most church ministries, it all started a couple of years ago with a vicious game of Dodgeball. Seriously. After humiliating each other and ourselves playing Dodgeball, a group of men went out to a local restaurant. Everyone had a great time and we all agreed that we should get together more often. And that’s when a small group of men decided to meet one morning and discuss ideas about forming a ministry devoted to men at Redeemer Hoboken. We decided there was a need for men in the church to gather and study God’s word as it uniquely relates to men. Yet we also agreed that Christian men just need to hang out, be together, and enjoy each other. What we needed was a brotherhood, and we felt God was moving us to form this new ministry.

The Men’s Ministry has a simple goal: to create a brotherhood of Christian men in which men can explore God’s meaning and purpose for them, while developing real and honest relationships with Christian brothers. This “brotherhood” cannot be developed with ten minutes of small talk after the Sunday service. The Men’s Ministry strives to give the men of the church opportunities to interact in environments that foster real relationships, honest communication, and express our love of Christ.

The Men’s Ministry meets on the third Saturday morning of every month for breakfast and bible study. The objective of the breakfasts is for men to discuss and explore the purpose God has for each one of us. Some topics we have discussed in the past are: how did God create men and women differently, what does real masculinity look like in the bible, Jesus: tender, loving, AND fierce, David as an example of a Godly man. In addition, the Men’s Ministry organizes one social event a month. The point here is simple: Christian guys need to hang out and enjoy each other just like anyone else. In the past we have played baseball, had bowling night, steaks at Arthur’s, hiking, etc.....

We have come a long way in just a couple of years. But we believe that God has great plans for us as individuals and as a group. A Men’s Retreat is in the planning phase and we have some other great events coming up. A brotherhood of Christian men is developing in our church. As soldiers for Christ, we are vulnerable and overmatched when we stand alone. But when we stand firm together, we are strong in body and spirit.
