In November 2010, members of our congregation visited a school for the deaf located in San Pedro Sula, Honduras with a remarkable story. Since then we've been raising funds and working to support this worthy cause.
how this project began:
Marcos David Jordan and his wife Sara live in Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. Marcos David was born deaf, but as an older child miraculously gained his hearing. As an adult who could hear he felt compelled to reach out to the deaf in Honduras who he knew from personal experience are largely marginalized. He began a ministry for the deaf in the city of San Pedro Sula, holding a service designed for those with hearing impairments, preaching to them and praying with them.
As his ministry grew Marcos David realized that the deaf community of San Pedro Sula had many unmet needs. He found that most could not read or write and therefore were unable to work and were completely supported by their families. As a result, with his wife Sara serving as school principal, he started a free school in San Pedro Sula for deaf children. In Honduras there is no separate public schooling for children with disabilities. The only option for deaf children without money is to attend public schools and attempt to learn alongside children who can hear. The result is that most Honduran deaf children drop out of school at a young age with little hope. They are unable to learn, work or become productive members of society. Marcos David, his wife Sara, and many others have boldly stepped in to solve this problem.
Their school impacts the lives of more than 350 kids. The kids learn of other children who have similar worries, fears, dreams and ambitions. Most importantly they witness a community that cares, teachers who believe and a future full of hope. The exciting part is that now we can help to build that future as well as a long term relationship with this school and community.
What Redeemer Hoboken is doing to help:
The Esmirna School for the Deaf currently teaches more than 100 deaf students and runs daily afterschool programs for more than 250 poor children in the local neighborhood. As the number of children wanting to attend the school has grown they have started building additional classrooms. The school currently consists of 3 floors, but the 1st floor is the only finished one. The 2nd floor, although utilized due to lack of space, lacks windows and requires new dividers between rooms. The 3rd floor is nowhere near complete, needing doors, windows and finishing work on the walls before paint can be applied. In addition, it still needs the installation of an electrical system, room dividers and a finished floor. We have two immediate goals as we begin working with Marcos David, Sara and The Esmirna School for the Deaf. The first goal is to raise $25K to help finish the classroom construction. The second goal is to send a mission team to the school in San Pedro Sula for the first week of November. There are three things the team accomplished on this trip:
1) Working on labor projects to help finish the school
2) Running a Vacation Bible School for the poor and deaf children
3) Training the school administrators and teachers as most have very little formal training
How you can support this project:
If you feel lead to support this remarkable school, you can help by contributing financially or by committing to pray for the team. We would appreciate your prayers for our safety during construction each day, smooth travels to and from Honduras and that we will show God’s love to the San Pedro Sula community we are going to serve. Anything you can donate to help fund this project would be much appreciated. Contribution checks should be made out to Redeemer Hoboken; all contributions are tax deductible. You also have the opportunity to contribute electronically via our website at www.redeemerhoboken.com/honduras.
