What is a Home Fellowship Group?

Home Fellowship Groups are small communities of six to twelve people who meet in homes once a week. Redeemer Hoboken Church considers this the “real” church because outside of the weekly Sunday worship service, this is where people grow in Christ by sharing our daily life through study, worship, prayer, and sharing each others lives.

Below is our HFG schedule as of October 2009.

These groups are open to anyone who is interested in developing closer relationships with other people, growing in your knowledge of yourself, and learning what Christianity has to do with your daily life. These groups are composed of men and women who are Christians, those who are exploring their spiritual beliefs, and the casually curious.

Each Home Fellowship Group is led by a trained leader who attends Redeemer Hoboken frequently. The group leader is trained to facilitate the participation of all group members, to help structure group social events, and to bring the assets of the church to bear in support of those who need special care. All group leaders receive continuous oversight and support in order to ensure that the group experience is enjoyable and beneficial for everyone.

What is the purpose of a Home Fellowship Group?

The ultimate goal of any Home Fellowship Group is to experience Christ's transforming presence in it's midst.

Jesus said, "Wherever two or three are gathered together in my name, there I will be also." (Matthew 18:20). We believe that there can be no greater gift or sense of well being than to be in the presence of Jesus Christ. Rules and moral codes do not bring a sense of peace and contentment — only Christ can do this. It is when people from all walks of life are gathered together, honestly examining Christ and His teachings and engaging and caring for each other, that Christ is experienced.

What happens in a Home Fellowship Group?

Generally the Bible or a Christian topic of interest is studied, because this is where we can meet Christ and learn what He has to say to us. Meetings include worship, prayer, spiritual nurture, social events and the chance to explore opportunities to improve our local communities through service.

What are the benefits of joining a Home
Fellowship Group?

Closer relationships — In our society today, it is very easy to become isolated. In the shadow of one of the most populated cities on the planet, one in which many of us work everyday, people can live their entire lives without any meaningful or deep contact with other people. Victories are enjoyed and losses are suffered alone. Home Fellowship Groups break this cycle by introducing people to each other and offering them a chance to invest in each others lives.

A place to discover abilities and gifts — When people share in each other's lives, they help each other to see and develop abilities which God has given to each person. Known strengths are developed and unknown abilities are discovered through interaction with other people. Also, group participants are encouraged to use these gifts to serve and encourage others to make an impact in our community, near and far.

A place to grow — Not only does a closely knit community help you to discover and develop your gifts, it helps you to grow personally and spiritually. We need others to help and encourage us in applying the truths of the Bible in our daily lives. Christ transforms every aspect of our lives. Our lives are so broad and deep that we are rarely able to see and comprehend these changes in their entirety. As we show grace to each other, we open ourselves to transformation.

How do I visit a Home Fellowship Group?

There are two ways to visit a group: invitation and request. Someone in an existing group can invite you to come with them. Also, you can request information about Home Fellowship Groups by sending an email to groups@redeemerhoboken.com.

One of the coordinators will contact you to introduce you to group leaders and arrange for your visit.

We encourage you to attend a group a few times before making a decision about the group. This will give you a clearer idea about the nature of the group. Most groups meet weekly. You will experience greater growth and community if you attend frequently. If work or other commitments prevent you from attending every week, try to make as many meetings as you can, and speak with your group leader about other ways to participate.
