WHAT IS AN ELDER?

The elders are responsible for the care and oversight of the church. From the New Testament we see this responsibility includes: being able to teach the Word (1 Timothy 3:2, 1 Tim 4:13), leading the church (1 Tim 5:17), the exhortation and admonishment of believers in sound doctrine (2 Tim 4:2, Tit 1:9), the shepherding and protection of the church against false teaching (Acts 20: 28-31), visiting and praying for the sick (James 5:14), supporting the weak (Acts 20:34) judgment of doctrinal issues (Acts 15:5- 19), and being examples to the flock (1Pet 5:3).

I grew up happily in England and became a naturalized American citizen 2003. In 1993 I graduated from Sussex University in England with a major in literature. At the age of 30 I became a Christian under the preaching of Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan. After graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1997 I was called as an Assistant Pastor at Redeemer. In 2003 I was called as Organizing Pastor of Redeemer Hoboken Mission Church. In 2005 we were particularized as a self-governing church with our own Elders, budget and vision.

I come from a loving family of Italian and Irish descent. I have been blessed with opportunities to live in France, Italy, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Chicago, but have called New Jersey home for most of my life. I went to church as a kid but drifted away in the college years. God began drawing me back after college by placing Christian believers into my various walks of life. I re-committed my life to Christ in 1997, the same year that I moved to Hoboken. I have been a leader at Redeemer Hoboken since its inception in 1999, and a ruling elder since 2005.

I have worked in the health care industry since 1997, first for a pharmaceutical company and now for a health benefits company, WellPoint. I met my wife Julie at Redeemer Hoboken, and we were married in 2007. We live in Hoboken and love cooking, traveling, making up funny songs and serving the Lord together. I am passionate about sports, music, and especially food...and will be happy to provide you with a detailed review of just about any restaurant in Hoboken.

Redeemer Hoboken is home to me. It's where I feel comfortable to be myself. I am a wandering Christian, constantly needing grace and forgiveness. This church preaches and practices the gospel; come as you are because you are loved by what Jesus did, not because of what you have done.

I enjoy the evening service because it’s a unique experience...maybe it's the time of the day or music or space, it's different in a refreshing way.

I’m originally from Bergenfield but have lived in Hoboken (the home of baseball) for more than half of my life. I make it a point to say the home of baseball because I like the sport, maybe a little too much.

My beautiful wife, Young, our fun daughter, Caroline, and I have been very happy here. It is a unique place where people truly like to gather and socialize. Our church community takes full advantage of that and we meet quite often for a variety of reasons; to have fun, to pray, to study, to eat, to simply enjoy each other's company.

I was blessed to have an idyllic childhood. I was the youngest of five kids. My Mom and Dad taught us to know God and the gospel. We were raised in rural Upstate New York, near Buffalo, and mountainous Vermont, near Killington and Pico (if you are a skier). I did two years of college in Middlebury, Vermont then finished with math and economics majors from Brown University.

My adult life has been centered around meeting and marrying Lori Johnson (God is good) and then raising three daughters together. We have spent our married lives in Manhattan, San Francisco, Hong Kong and Hoboken. The moves were part of a 19-year career at J P Morgan, where I did a little bit of everything: commercial lending, domestic and international corporate finance, sales and trading, and futures brokerage. Then in 1993 God gave me a new direction. I was called to teach and work at Mustard Seed School here in Hoboken, which I continue to do now.

Lori and I began attending Redeemer Hoboken in September 1999 when the first public worship service was held. We have been regular attenders and members ever since. We are grateful for this church and the rich fellowship here. God is certainly using Redeemer Hoboken as a beacon in Hoboken and Hudson County. It has been a wonderful church home for our family for more than ten years. Lori and I enjoy all the ways God has called us to serve. We love our home fellowship group. We are particularly grateful for the blessing it is to worship with children each Sunday.

I was born in Mississippi in a small town to two teenagers who found themselves in an unwanted pregnancy. I often joke that I practically raised them. Multiple jobs were required of my dad due to our lack of wealth and education. We moved to Alabama when I was a child and a little sister was added to our family. I did the typical things a kid does through the growing up years ... bikes, forts, sports and decent grades except for behavior marks. I remember a bus ministry coming to get me and taking me to church. My how those folks served me every week looking after me as a young boy. My parents weren't into church at all. In my teenage years, I came to understand the gospel was for me too! I remember being involved and encouraged there at church those critical years through my youth pastor, senior pastor and yes, even the minister of music as I began to love to sing early. While in college, I continued to be involved in Christian student organizations and even went on a few missions trips. I eventually graduated from the University of Alabama (roll Tide), moved to a new city and discovered a PCA church through a few friends. After moving to Atlanta, I became really involved in singles ministry, foreign missions, discipleship and worship. It was a great growth time under a number of elders and pastors, not to mention getting married at age 36 to a wonderful woman, Mary.

Then, work brought us to the NYC area and our most recent pastor in Atlanta had been a Redeemer transplant. When we discovered Hoboken via a new co-worker, we looked online for a Redeemer church in Hoboken and went to the service that night. After getting involved in a home fellowship group, music and worship leading, some people mentioned I should consider being an elder. I was on the fence, but the decision came down to me wanting to be involved in what God is involved in and He loves the church!

We have lived in Hoboken 7 years, had two children, Luke and Ruth, and had the opportunity to serve in many ways. What I long for is a church full of broken people who are okay being saved and rescued by our mighty savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. I am not perfect but He has made me glad because He is perfect on my behalf. My work in this church is to learn how to model in front of others the truth that my "performance" of life itself is an expression of love to God for His performance on my behalf, for life, and that life is now and eternal. Now that is something I love to sing about ... daily!

I am originally from Colorado, where I spent much of my time outdoors, backpacking and climbing. I graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Fine Art and Painting. I moved to New York in the late eighties and studied painting at the New York Academy. My wife, Elizabeth, and I met and married in Hoboken, and lived there for many years while we both worked in the city. We were part of the original Redeemer church plant in Hoboken and led a fellowship group in our home on Garden Street. We now live in Rutherford with our sons, Emmett and Benjamin. My desire to serve as an elder springs from the belief that, the Author and Finisher of my faith is leading me in this direction. It is my true hope to stay in step with this calling and that by His grace I may be found useful in the work of His church for the glory of His son.
